The works in the Aquavivas Series primarily address the theme of transformation. “Aquavivas”, derives from the Portuguese word for jellyfish, literally translated as “living water”. The series visually postulates that the catalyst for life on earth was the radiant energy of the sun combining with the encapsulating waters of the earth. In a metaphorical sense, this could be described as the Apollonian light of our nearest star, the father, entering and being held by earth’s Dionysian water, the mother. Life first crystallized here, in the form of simple microscopic organisms such as the diatom and radiolarian. These simple life forms, literal seeds of life, mark the elemental transformation from inorganic matter to living organic form.
